In the 1600s folk tale, the Golem of Prague, a rabbi feels compelled to make a clay man brought to life by a divine spark to defend his community. I'd found myself continually confronted by this story in various forms at the time I presented some of my comic book-page like sequences to a gallery director who asked, 'you've got this comic page-layout - what's your story?' and shortly thereafter I realized that the golem story was mine; my natural inclination has always been to make my own two-dimensional beings and try to uncover their unique personalities, their inner qualities their spark of life. "Golem-Maker," made its debut in 2005 at fscott gallery, 29 Hudson Rd, Sudbury, Mass. -Lawrence Strauss |
