Thayer Symphony Performing Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony
pastel and ink on paper, 40″ x 27″, 2003
Painted in celebration of the Thayer’s 30th anniversary. This is a sequence of images meant to convey the feelings of Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony — with its discordant, pastoral, dark passages … to land us finally in a reassuring, melodic movement.

My painting became the basis for a poster sold at the concerts and as the cover of the annual program book.
