Based on the Mary painting at Dura-Europos (at Yale, right), which was intentionally painted dark — compare the light painted decorated border to the attached figurative passage. In my painting I wanted to tell the big personality of the New Testament’s Peter. I was thinking about capturing the spirit of the painters of Dura-Europos, if not their way of thought, in mixing my approaches to subject and decoration, conveying space with the contrast of modeled forms and flat planes, and lost and found passages.
